Healing & Downsizing
Healing takes time. Proper jewelry fit matters.
Healing times can vary depending on the type of piercing, your anatomy, jewelry quality, aftercare, lifestyle, overall health, and your location in the world. Understanding the healing process — including the importance of downsizing — can help improve comfort, reduce irritation, and support better long-term results.

Every body heals differently.
Some piercings heal quickly, while others may take many months to fully stabilize. Patience and proper care are key.

The Healing Process

Initial Swelling
Fresh piercings often swell during the first several days or weeks. To safely accommodate swelling, initial jewelry is usually slightly longer or larger than the final intended fit.

Early Healing
During healing, it is normal to experience:
-
Mild tenderness
-
Swelling
-
Crusting
-
Temporary redness
-
Minor irritation

Stabilization
As swelling reduces and the piercing begins to settle, the jewelry may start to feel loose or move more than before.
This is often the stage where downsizing becomes important.

Follow your piercer's aftercare instructions and attend all recommended check-ups to ensure the best healing possible.

What is Downsizing?
Downsizing is the process of replacing the original longer jewelry with a shorter, better-fitting piece once swelling has reduced. Initial jewelry is intentionally longer to allow room for swelling during the early healing period. Once the piercing stabilizes, properly fitted jewelry helps improve comfort and reduce irritation.

Initial Jewelry
Longer jewelry allows room for swelling and healing.

Swelling Reduces
As healing progresses, the jewelry may begin to feel loose or move excessively

Switch to a Shorter
Your piercer replaces the jewelry with a shorter, more appropriate fit. This is usually performed by a professional piercer during the healing process.
Why Downsizing Matters
-
Reduces Irritation
Excessively long jewelry can move around and create friction.
-
Prevents Snagging
Loose jewelry is more likely to catch on clothing, hair, towels, or bedding.
-
Supports Proper Healing
Well-fitted jewelry can help reduce pressure, movement, and healing complications.
-
Improves Comfort
Appropriately sized jewelry generally feels better and looks cleaner once swelling subsides.
Factors That Affect Healing
-
Sleeping on the piercing
-
Touching or moving jewelry
-
Snagging or trauma
-
Poor aftercare habits
-
Stress and overall health
-
Smoking or vaping
-
Jewelry quality and material
-
Improper jewelry fit
-
Pressure from hats, headphones, or clothing
Important Things To Know

Healing Is Not Linear
Piercings may feel fine one week and irritated the next. Minor setbacks during healing can happen.

Do Not Change Jewelry Yourself Too Early
Changing jewelry prematurely may irritate the piercing or delay healing. Always consult your piercer before changing jewelry during healing.

Quality Jewelry Matters
Implant-grade materials and properly fitted jewelry can significantly improve healing outcomes.

Check In With Your Piercer
Follow-up appointments and downsizing appointments are an important part of the healing process.
